Jean Paul Gaultier, a French haute couture and prêt-a-porter fashion designer, never received formal training as a designer; he instead started sending sketches to famous couture stylists form an early age. His talent was scouted by Pierre Cardin after he was impressed with his talent; he was hired as an assistant in 1970. Following this he worked alongside Jacques Esterel in 1971 and Jean Patou later that year, then returning to manage the Pierre Cardain boutique in Manila for a year in 1974.
Jean Paul Gaultier balances futuristic military and traditional feminine glamour in his AW13 collection. The collection had a distinct air of contradiction, contrasting styles, textures and cuts united effortlessly under the Gaultier name. Harsh linear jackets and strong linear cuts paired off with coy, off the shoulder cuts luxurious furs and flowing skirts. Jean Paul Gaultier has always advanced his unique vision of the world by incorporating design trademarks from his past into current collections.
