For Autumn Winter Junya focused his attention on the leather jacket. A symbol of freedom of expression for decades Watanabe took the motif of the jacket and deconstructed it, then reworking it’s classic form Watanabe resculpted the motif into its every conceivable shape; sending capes, kimonos, biker jackets and corseted leathers down the runway to much applause from the fashion press. Born in Fukushima Watanabe studied at the Bunka Fashion College before he graduated and took a position at fashion house Comme des Garcons as a pattern cutter. Under the watchful eye of legendary designer and founder of a Comme Des Garcon Rei Kawakubo, Watanabe flourished and soon started designing for the CDG menswear line before with the aid of CDG he launched his own eponymously named collection in 1992.
