Demeulemeester’s idea of spring is located on a mythic dune somewhere between North Africa and the arid stretches of America, a notion echoed by having sand strewn across the runway. She built her look up through layers of burnooses; fluid, floor-trailing sheer pants; intricate and intricately cut jackets; flowing dresses in ombré chiffon that darkens from sand through gray to black; and a brilliant sun-shielding wide-brimmed hat that’s part Sergio Leone, part Paul Bowles. Of course, trying to specify what makes this Demeulemeester collection so poetic and beautiful is a bit like trying to catch those grains of sand in your fingers; it’s tangible, yet is slippery to grasp.
