Rick Owens Spring Summer 2019: Babel
Rick Owens' Spring Summer ’19 collection has been entitled ‘Babel’. The name hails from the Biblical story, The Tower of Babel, which explains why people across the world speak different languages. The Tower reference is taken further with the focus on Tatlin’s Tower. Rick describes the Tatlin’s Tower as a “symbol of hope” and says, “there is something so compelling about how it looks. A Constructivist tower is about control, and the Tower of Babel is about confusion: everybody splitting up and too much information”
This confusion vs control element could be seen on the runway. Constructivist metal structures were worn on the heads and arms of models juxtaposed with elongated, free flowing, reckless silhouettes. Tatlin’s Tower imagery could also be seen on large, two-tone embroidery replicating the height and depth of the never-finished tower. Loose top stitch detailing, over studded design and heavily coated woven patches make up a large part of this seasons aesthetic injecting a new take on classic silhouettes.
