Comme des Garçons is the exalted Japanese label headed up by designer Rei Kawakubo, - Kawakubo is regarded by many in the fashion industry as a genius. Comme des Garçons’ is French for ‘like the boys’, a name that reflects the design aesthetic of mixed masculine and feminine motifs, as well as the often playful overtones.
Rei’s modus operandi is to always try to create something new; to make clothes which have never been made before. Comme des Garçons pieces are often deconstructed and ‘distressed’ or left ‘unfinished’.
Today the Comme des Garçons brand encompasses both fashion and fragrances with a host of sub-brands including PLAY, an irreverent and fun collection of street style garments, and SHIRT which is dominated with tailored items. In 2009, CDG felt it was necessary to do something in response to the general negativity engendered by the recession and to counter the feeling of things being blocked or stopped because of the crisis. Black Comme des Garçons was born. 2013 marks the regeneration of that concept through the launch of Black Comme des Garcons Eau de Toilette, an emergency, guerrilla-like, spiced-up new scent.
