Comme des Garçons is the exalted Japanese label headed up by designer Rei Kawakubo, - Kawakubo is regarded by many in the fashion industry as a genius. Trading since 1969, the label is respected internationally as an avant-garde tour de force and creative empire which sprawls far further than the mainline collections.
Comme des Garçons is French for ‘like the boys’, a name that reflects the design aesthetic of mixed masculine and feminine motifs, as well as the often playful overtones.
Rei’s modus operandi is to always try to create something new; to make clothes which have never been made before. Comme Des Garçons pieces are often deconstructed and ‘distressed’ or left ‘unfinished’.
Today the Comme des Garçons brand encompasses both fashion and fragrances with a host of sub-brands including PLAY, an irreverent and fun collection of street style garments, and SHIRT which is dominated with tailored items.
