The designer Rei Kawakubo launched a side business as a freelance fashion stylist in Tokyo, which quickly became a well-known fashion brand: Comme des Garçons. The label was started in 1969 and established as a company Comme des Garçons Co. Ltd in 1973. It became successful in Japan in the 1970s.

The year 1981 saw Comme des Garçons's debut show in Paris, it newness through its predominant use of black and distressed fabrics.

The label is French for ‘like the boys’ and it is based in two key locations: Aoyama in Tokyo and Place de Vendôme in Paris.

The designer has a passionately loyal clientele worldwide: fans who are fascinated with her avant-garde, unconventional and always leading designs and creations.

For the AW 16 collections the designer continued the three-dimensional development that she started for the SS16 collection.

Comme des Garçons proposed a concept absolutely new to the French fashion scene: 18th-century Punk.

The outfits are multi-conceptual and multi-layered and they will be source of inspiration for a long time and for many designers. This is what Rei Kawakubo does: She substantially helps the fashion world go round.

Flouncy floral prints, rich in bright blooms against black, silk juxtapositions, candy-pink coats are key to the womenswear. She visited Lyon, town of France's historical but fading silk industry, to find the fabrics that she transformed into vast, though elegant tent-like garments.

Rei Kawakubo explained the concept of how Punk might have appeared during the period of 18th-century revolutions exploding around Europe.


Through the AW16 menswear the designer explored the warring sides of masculinity, as well as the warring sides of humanity, with a collection that blends the formalities of tailoring with pieces that look ready for battle with floral headpieces by Julien d’Ys.


While Comme des Garçons’ womenswear may be renowned for explosive silhouettes, Kawakubo’s menswear collections is based on the traditional shirt, jacket, trousers combination; a series of leather waistcoats with Samurai-like shoulders that buckled across the chest, and jackets that came with straps over shoulders or punctured with metal rivets.

Comme Des Garçons is the exalted Japanese label headed up by designer Rei Kawakubo, - Kawakubo is regarded by many in the fashion industry as a genius. Trading since 1969, the label is respected internationally as an avant-garde tour de force and creative empire which sprawls far further than the mainline collections.

Rei’s modus operandi is to always try to create something new; to make clothes which have never been made before. Comme Des Garçons pieces are often deconstructed and ‘distressed’ or left ‘unfinished’.

Under the Comme Des Garçons umbrella brand, other designers have created lines, most notably Junya Watanabe and more recently Tao Kurihara, meaning that there are multiple mens and womenswear lines, for different occasions, as well as ‘PLAY’, an irreverent and fun collection of street-style garments, ‘Shirt’, for tailored shirting, and a range of unisex fragrances. Masters of collaboration, Comme has also worked with the great and the good of the fashion industry, including Louis Vuitton, Cutler and Gross, and Converse.
